Carbon Offset Forestry Project
The Carbon Offset Forestry Project helps to conserve and replace the Costa Rican rainforest by purchasing non-protected primary and secondary rainforest, thus preventing it from being destroyed. The rare animals and birds that inhabit this rainforest are saved from possible extinction, as well as the precious forest trees that absorb the CO2 from our atmosphere, a process essential to the survival of our planet. The project has been quantified according to the guidelines if the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the world’s leading authority on climate change and its impacts.
Costa Rica is ranked 5th in the world for human poverty according to the United Nations (UNDP), and 8th in the world for poverty below $2 a day. The Carbon Offset Reforestation Project provides lucrative employment opportunities for the local population of Costa Rica both directly and indirectly. The project also offers research opportunities as well as facilitating an array of community projects. For details of recent social events, charities and activities, please see our news & articles section.
Costa Rica, although a tiny country, is home to an enormous 5% of the world's biodiversity, boasting 200 species of hummingbird alone (1). The Carbon Offset Forestry Project actively protects and restores the natural habitat of a broad variety of animals, birds, reptiles and insects.
The Carbon Offset Forestry Project has been designed as a Carbon offset project, based on REDD activities for the voluntary market. The voluntarily carbon offset market doubled from 2007 to 2008, to reach $700m, and forecasts are suggesting that the market could double again before 2012 (2).
This project is now closed to investment, but details of community work and project progress will feature on Silva Tree newsletters. To sign up for newsletters, please click here.
